How fast am I able to charge?
Charge times vary based on both the vehicle and the charger but knowing the Charging Level’s is the first step to answering this question.
Level 1 | 120V charging | 2-5 Miles per hour of charging | 10-20+ hours for a full charge
You can charge most electric vehicles by plugging them in to a normal in to a normal 120V wall outlet. While very easy to find, this is the slowest way to charge your EV. EV’s generally come with Level 1 chargers.
Level 2 | 208-240V Charging | 10-60 Miles per hour of charging | 2-6 Hours for a full charge
These are our typical residential systems. While some car manufacturers are providing portable Level 2 chargers, they require specific outlets and a permanently mounted system offer features and options that help you get the most out of your EV. This is the option that allows you to leave home with a “full tank” every day.
Level 3 (DC Fast Charge and Tesla SuperChargers) | 480V+ | 80% charge in as little as 20 mins
These high-power systems are found in public areas and along major corridors. They are usually used to get a quick charge on a long trip or if you haven’t had access to your normal charger. They are not generally not recommended as your everyday charger.
What is a Smart Charger and do I need one?
Chargers have come a long way in a relatively short time. Smart Charges offer some features with immediate benefits and some that will be play a bigger part as EV adoption takes off. A connected charger will mean that you’ll be able to have control over how and when your car charges which can:
- Save money by charging when electricity is cheapest
- Charge while the grid is the cleanest
- Integrate with Smart Home devices
- Participate in demand response through your utility
It is for these reasons that MOST REBATE PROGRAMS REQUIRE a connected, or smart charger. We can pair you with chargers that have these features and qualify for rebates.
What are the best locations to charge?
This depends on a few factors. Ultimately, you’ll want to have the charger within about 15’ of where you’d like to park your EV. With that said, there are a few considerations that do effect the installation cost. Most of the chargers offered can be mounted in a garage, or outdoors. Mounting to a wall is usually easiest and cheapest way. If you want your charger further away from the house, it can usually be done and may just cost a little more. Trenching wires underground, mounting posts, cable reels and longer charging cables can all help. Ultimately, this is something you’ll probably end up using daily. Let’s put it where you know it will be most convenient over time.
